You Are At Risk For Oral Cancer

If You Have  HPV, There Is A High Risk for Oral Cancer: Get Your Mouth Checked!

And Get Vaccinated!

HPV is the most common sexually transmitted disease and is highly overlooked.
Data shows that more than 90 percent of the US population has HPV and anyone who is sexually active is almost guaranteed to catch HPV if not vaccinated.

HPV was thought to only affect women causing them to have a high-risk for cervical cancer but rare for men.

Unfortunately, there are recent studies that say otherwise. There has been a spike in reports of men diagnosed with oral cancer and the leading cause is HPV.

April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month; with the epidemic of oral cancer in males caused by HPV it is important to spread awareness about getting HPV vaccinations and get annual oral cancer screening exams for both men and women.

If You Have HPV?

You should maintain regular dental checkups. We are trained to spot any symptoms of oral cancer. Inform your dentist and hygienist that you have HPV so they can watch for any abnormal changes. The earlier it is found,  the higher the chance of success with treatment.  Ask for ViziLite Treatment, an oral cancer screening exam. For the entire month of April, it is 50% OFF at Dental Care of Stamford.

Symptoms of Oral Cancer:

  • a sore, or soreness or irritation that doesn’t go away in 10-14 days
  • red or white patches, or pain, tenderness, or numbness in mouth or lips
  • lumps, thickening tissues, rough spots, crusty or eroded areas
  • difficulty chewing, swallowing, speaking, or moving your jaw or tongue
  • a change in the way your teeth fit together when you close your mouth

An oral cancer exam needs to be a part of everyone’s dental check up.
