New Canaan is a small town of about 20,000 located in Fairfield County. It is known as being one of the wealthiest towns in the United States. It is part of Connecticut’s “Gold Coast” and is bordered by Darien, CT; Stamford, CT; Norwalk, CT; and Lewisboro, NY.
New Canaan has beautiful architecture, many public parks, and a vibrant downtown. Its residents embrace small town traditions such as caroling on Christmas Eve and participating in numerous festivals. It is also renown for its award-winning public school system, which was ranked the #1 school system in Connecticut in 2018 and ranked #3 nationally in 2008. In the architectural world, New Canaan is famous for being a home to the mid-century modern movement, particularly due to the work of the “Harvard Five.” Features such as open concepts, glass walls were an anthesis of the architecture in New England style and today serve as design landmarks.
For recreation, residents flock to Waveny Park. The central icon of the park, nicknamed “The Castle,” is surrounded by 300 acres of walking trails, ponds, and fields. “The Castle,” or Waveny Mansion, has been used in shows such as “All My Children” and the “Stepford Wives.” Area residents, however, simply like the park as a way to unwind, explore, and escape the bustle of city life.
New Canaan is accessible to New York City by train, cab, or car.
